Generation Z represents the newest group entering the workforce. Despite their importance, there is limited knowledge about their specific values, expectations, and behaviors in professional environments. However, it has been well-established that this generation requires a distinct approach in organizational processes such as selection, hiring, onboarding, and retention. Accordingly, this research aims to examine the work values and expectations of Generation Z.
This study is theory-based with an exploratory approach, as it seeks to identify existing theories in a specific area. A systematic review, based on the Kitchenham and Charters model, was conducted. This model consists of three main stages: planning, conducting the systematic review, and reporting. Additionally, it includes seven procedural steps: formulating research questions, developing a search strategy, defining selection criteria, conducting the search, selecting studies, data extraction and analysis, and quality control.
To better analyze and address the research questions related to Generation Z, four main themes were conceptualized: Generation Z’s internal and external values, job expectations, and anticipated career development. In addition to these four themes, nine categories and several subcategories were identified to represent Generation Z’s work values and expectations. While this research aims to examine the work values and expectations of Generation Z, it can provide valuable insights for organizational leaders seeking to understand this generation and focus on attraction, development, and retention processes. Furthermore, various sectors of society, including policymakers and stakeholders in education and technology, may also benefit from the study’s findings.
