Designing a model for employees’ mental absence in tourism and hospitality (field of study: tourism and hospitality businesses in Shiraz)

Abstract

The present research was carried out with the aim of designing a model for employees’ mental absence in tourism and hospitality. This research is developmental in terms of its purpose and qualitative in terms of method and was carried out usin grounded theory method. The statistical population consists of tourism and hospitality businesses in Shiraz city and necessary data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews, using the snowball method and based on the data saturation. In this process, after conducting 16 interviews, data saturation was achieved. However, in order to be more sure, the interview process continued and a total of 19 people were interviewed. The findings indicate that the employees’ mental absence in tourism and hospitality businesses is influenced by three categories of causal factors (individual factors, job-related factors, and managerial factors). Contextual factors (structural, interpersonal, cultural and weak human resource management systems) and intervening factors (individual and non-individual) also affect this phenomenon. The consequences of employees’ mental absence in tourism and hospitality businesses were also identified at three individual, organizational and extra-organizational levels. The validity of the analyzes was also calculated with the intra-subject agreement method and through the participation of a colleague. According to the amount of intra-subject agreement (77 percent), the analyzes have the required validity
